- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the "Southern Workman," an in-house periodical of the Hampton Institute. Topics covered include some evidence that the periodical is a multiracial publication, despite its classification as a white periodical, the role played by the periodical press within communities of people of color in the turn-of-the-century U.S., and the diverse array of writers contributing to the periodical, including W.E.B. Du Bois, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and E. Pauline Johnson.
