- Abstract
The article discusses methods for teaching the African American civil rights movement and their struggle for freedom in the 1960s, including the teaching of the 1964 Freedom Summer civil rights campaign of registering African American voters in Mississippi. An overview of the historiography of the civil rights movement, including in regard to race relations and the strategic decision to involve white activists to garner national attention, is provided.
