The article discusses the history of newspaper press directories in Great Britain in the 19th-century. Topics include the readership of the newspaper press directories, such as the Newspaper Press Directory and Sell's Dictionary of the World's Press, that included newspapers and periodicals from 1860, the strong identification between the advertising industry and the press in the Newspaper Press Directory, and the symbolic relationship between advertising agencies and the press.
