- Abstract
The article presents data from a study on the effectiveness of eletriptan for patients whose acute migraine headaches have failed to respond to treatment with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It has been found that eletriptan can be effective in patients who have failed an NSAID or, for that matter, one oral triptan is as good as or even marginally superior to another. Still unanswered is the question of where oral triptans should rank in the hierarchy of therapies for acute migraine of mild to moderate severity. Although all oral triptans currently available are superior to placebo for the acute treatment of moderate to severe migraine, it is becoming increasingly clear that they are most effective when administered early in the attack, before the headache has gained biologic momentum and central sensitization has occurred.
