- Abstract
The article discusses the study conducted in Amiens, France, which sought the diagnosis of pulmonary colonization with pneumocystis jirovecii, an atypical fungus that causes severe pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. There were two sets of subjects in the study, one of which is the 30 healthy subjects and the other one is composed of 50 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Eight patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were detected with the fungus, which suggests that P. jirovecii is apparently uncommon in healthy subjects and that Amiens plays a minor role in the circulation of the fungus within human communities.
