- Abstract
This article aims to compare the cinema censorship systems in Portugal and Spain at the end of both dictatorships (1968-1974). What were the differences and similarities between the political and cultural regimes with regards to the mechanisms of censorship of cinema? What criteria governed the respective censorship commissions during these years? Was there a greater openness, or on the contrary, tighter control over what was censored or not? These are questions to which this article proposes to find possible answers, based on the disclosure and analysis of film censorship files that can be found in the National Archives of both countries. The answers to these questions show that there are more similarities than differences regarding film censorship, with both Iberian countries showing randomness in the criteria and reinforcement of censorship in the last few years. This article is part of the special theme section on Film Censorship in the Iberian Dictatorships, guest-edited by Ana Bela Morais.
