- Abstract
Focussing on Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, this paper will contend that development-focussed non-governmental organisations (NGOs) pay insufficient attention to male victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This inconsistent attention has not been translated into gender-specific approaches to sexual violence. Many of the reasons for the rape of females in conflict also apply to the rape of males, but male-specific motives (such as the "feminization" of the male through sexual violence) are also integral to a more complete understanding of this form of gender-based violence. Furthermore, sexual violence against men is sometimes not recognised as sexual in nature due to the continual focus on women as the victims of such crimes. This paper also suggests that rape against men may be under-recognised due to funding constraints of NGOs which must focus on issues that appeal to donors.
