- Abstract
Anarchy in the Horn: A Study of Clanship in Somalia pertains to the anarchical situation that has persisted in Somalia since the early 1990s. Recent media coverage and a plethora of scholars have posited clan-based violence as one of the main factors fuelling the flames of chaos. Clanship and derivative violence is viewed using the common social scientific frameworks of primordialism and constructivism. The article contends that the primordialist line of thought is inadequate and that constructivism offers the most comprehensive and suitable theoretical framework with which to analyze, explain and prescribe policy for moving forward in the Somali case study.
