- Abstract
The article looks at the history of families in Japan from the 1868 Meiji Restoration to the 21st century. Particular focus is given to family system theory and to the effects of changes in families on their overall structure and operation. Details on multigenerational families and patterns in marriage and childbirth are presented. Other topics include the concept of the home, or ie, the animation fan movement known as otaku, and the single people in their twenties and thirties known as parasaito singuru.
