- Abstract
This paper outlines the history of the Australian merchant sailing fleet using data gathered from accounts of 5,600 shipwrecks and 1,680 incidents. These data were entered into an Excel database compiled as part of the REMORA project: a Register of Every Merchantman Operating or Recorded in Australasia. Each vessel's details are captured in 50 data fields that cover its provenance, voyages and cargoes, the circumstances of its loss or retirement and accidents during its career. The loss profiles of the whole fleet and the various types of merchant sailing vessels are compared and discussed, as well as vessel registrations, construction and losses over time. Incidents, hulkings, retirements and qualitative accounts of life at sea are also presented and discussed. An independent sample of the whole merchant fleet from 1877-1914 has been recently located, which may enable the full size of the fleet to be estimated. The paper outlines the provenance of this list from the archive of the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of New South Wales.
