- Abstract
The article discusses a July 4-5, 1946 pogrom in Kielce in light of anti-Semitism in post-war Poland and sociologist Victor Turner's notion of social drama. Topics include the role of blood libel mythology in the pogrom, Polish anxiety about children allegedly being abducted by Jews, and a conflict of jurisdiction between a Citizens' Militia and the Urząd Bezpieczeństwa (UB, State Security Services). Also addressed are the relation between anti-Communist sentiment and resentment of Jewish refugees, problems with the investigation of the pogrom, and the relation of the Roman Catholic Church to Polish anti-Semitism.
