THE SCOPE OF ENGLISH NEGATION.

- Abstract
Negation in English is a broad topic; it affects words, phrases, and sentences. The present article aims at presenting an account of the formal relation that holds between affirmative sentences and their negative counterparts. Understandably, syntactic negation is indeed problematic. One reason is that different languages tend to place their negative particle in different positions of the sentence: post-auxiliary (English), post-verbal (German), preverbal (Spanish and Romanian) etc. Other reasons that make this matter worth investigating concern the form of the negative constituent, the number of negative constituents allowed in a sentence, the existence of certain polarity items which have to be used in environments which share their polarity and so on. Such issues are tackled in this article.
