- Authors
Ferretti, Emanuela
- Abstract
Carlo Falconieri was the chief engineer who oversaw the restructuring of the Palazzo Vecchio prior to its becoming the seat of the House of Deputies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1865. The plan of works by Falconieri has been used by scholars studying the history of the structural work undertaken within the Palazzo Vecchio and reveals a well-considered building program, especially in certain areas of the complex. The article presents a complete transcription of Falconieri’s report submitted on completion of the works, held in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato (National Archives, Rome), which allows new readings and interpretations of the project. It is preceded by a brief introduction which places Falconieri’s work in its temporal and cultural context regarding to other building projects undertaken in the Palazzo Vecchio from the early nineteenth century to the twentieth century.
