- Abstract
Introduction: The increase in childhood obesity is a public health problem, therefore monitoring growth and body composition is relevant for interventions and the development of appropriate public policies. This study aims to describe and compare information on the growth and body composition of 8 to 10-yearold students with reference values. Materials and Methods: A total of 514 children (241 boys and 273 girls) were randomly selected from 18 municipal schools. Measurements of height, body mass (BM), waist circumference (WC), and skinfold thickness (ST) in the subscapular (SS) and triceps (TR) regions were obtained. From the height, BM, and ST measurements, Body Mass Index (BMI) and body adiposity (SS+TR) were determined. The results were compared with reference values based on the number of standard deviations (Z-score) from the mean of populations with similar characteristics. Results: All growth and body composition variables were higher for the children in this study compared to the reference. Highlights (> 1 SD) for 8-year-olds were height (boys and girls) and BM (girls). Conclusion: The 8 to 10-year-old children in this study are taller, heavier, and have higher adiposity compared to children from the 1990s.
