- Authors
Blankenbiller, Amy J.
- Abstract
The article discusses the Model Elevator Law (MEL) and its role in promoting consistent safety standards for the elevator industry across different jurisdictions in the United States. The MEL provides guidelines for permitting, inspections, enforcement, code adoption, licensing, and safety reporting. Currently, 12 states have fully adopted the MEL, while others have implemented some elements of it. The collaboration between the National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) and the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) has been instrumental in updating the MEL to reflect current safety standards. The article emphasizes the importance of collaboration and flexibility in achieving universal adoption of the MEL.
