The article discusses problems, both political and environmental, in the Nigerian oil industry. Oil and oil-derived products account for 95% of Nigeria's exports. In August 2011, however, a United Nations' (UN) report looking at oil pollution in the Ogoniland region found that a clean-up would take 30 years. Shell Nigeria also shut down production following Nigeria's worst spill in a decade. Views of some Nigerian chemical engineers regarding these issues are presented.
