The article examines challenges in processing nuclear residues from manufacturing fuels. At the Preston facility of the British National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), chemical engineers and scientists work in integrated teams to characterise the waste through sampling and analysis and to develop a treatment process before the waste can be processed. Safety considerations in performing the process are also explained.
