- Abstract
The article focuses on asthma in children. Particular attention is given to a program aimed at keeping asthmatic children healthy, active, and focused on academics, while decreasing school absenteeism by 50% and hospitalizations by 75%. Pediatric asthma and allergy specialist Paul Ehrlich and welfare executive Barbara Cutler teamed up with international PR firm Fleishman-Hillard and New York City schools to help create Project ERASE: Eradicating Respiratory Asthma in Schools to help children Excel. The author reports that their efforts focused on underprivileged children with limited access to routine medical care, virtually no access to specialists, and hospitalization rates four times the national average. The program brings specialists into schools on a pro-bono basis.
