THE EARLY CAREER OF VIOLET OAKLEY, ILLUSTRATOR.
- Authors
Hook, Bailey Van
- Abstract
The article reports on the career of the illustrator and muralist Violet Oakley. Oakley was born in 1874 and is thought of as the sole female beaux-arts muralist but she was originally an illustrator with her sister Hester. Her career began in 1871 and is nearly only documented by a scrapbook kept by her mother and a fictional novel written by her sister Hester. Oakley's family has a history of being involved in the arts with two of her aunts having exhibitions at the National Academy of Design. Oakley began her career in murals in 1900 and her work features a realist style influenced by her religious beliefs.
