- Abstract
The article discusses the history of female stage performers and playwrights in commercial English theater since the Elizabethan period. It is noted that the Globe, Blackfriars and Red Bull stage roles had initially been occupied by men and boys but that women's theatrical participation started in the post-Reformation era. It also takes up the influence of women on the plays of Shakespeare, Marlowe and Middleton as well as the transition from transvestite boy actors in the stage.
