- Title
Surpassing the King's Two Bodies: The Politics Of Staging the Royal Effigy in Marlowe's Edward II.
- Authors
ANDERSON, THOMAS P.
- Abstract
An essay on the staging of the royal hearse in the final scene of the play "Edward II," by the late Christopher Marlowe and the political implications of the performance of the effigy by an actor, on the early modern stage, is presented. It notes that the medieval political theory of the two bodies of the king is recalled with the animation of the royal effigy with the body of an actor, and the challenge to royal absolutism presented from within the king's dead body.
