- Abstract
In Mythology, birds and sphinxes-fantastic creatures in which bird and several different animals are shown together-have always been effective both as a being that encourages people with the act of flying and to give a message in art and literature. The bird image is also one of the many metaphors used to show the power struggle between men and women. In the early periods of history - matriarchal - except that a strong bird such as a falcon was identified with a woman, women were often identified with birds, which are the symbol of beautiful, delicate and fragile beings, throughout history, as in many branches of art today. The same approach applies when naming women; Dove, a delicate bird species, is a female name as "Dove", while a strong bird species eagle is a male name as "Eagle". In addition, in many transformation-metamorphosismyths, the subject is woman, as in the example of Leda-Swan, and in the well-known ballet "Swan Lake", the swan is identical with woman. In the case of sphinxes, it is seen that they are related to women in their representations in art. The study aims to reveal how the relationship between female goddesses and bird is reflected in art and literature through myths, the visual representations of bird image and its representations in literature, starting with the sphinx, which is the fantastic product of artistic creation, and Ancient Greek Mythology, with selected examples.
