- Abstract
Blood pressure is the pressure in the circulating blood. Hypertension has no symptoms if left untreated, it can lead to heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure can vary because of physiological as well as some pathological conditions. Blood pressure can be regulated by long term and short term mechanisms within the body. Valerian is a shrub rich in medicinal value found in Asia. Valerian can reduce depression, menstrual cramps and anxieties. It can also reduce stress before surgeries. The main aim is to analyse the effect of valerian oil on blood pressure and heart rate. The study was carried out among 30 individuals who were having systolic pressure more than 140mmHg. They were instructed to apply 2-3 drops of oil on their forehead or spray on the pillow before going to bed for 30 days. Blood pressure was recorded before and after after the inhalation. The data were collected and analysed using statistics. In the present study, systolic blood pressure recorded was 144.86 before and 122.73 after using valerian oil. The diastolic blood pressure recorded was 85.33 before and 79 after using valerian oil. Heart rate recorded was 96.81 before and 83.25 after using valerian oil. From this study, it is evident that valerian oil can not only induce sleep but can also decrease Blood pressure and Heart rate by soothing the nerves and brain and thus reducing the stress level. Hence, the effect of valerian oil on blood pressure and heart rate is proved.
