- Abstract
Objective: Main: Evaluate the anesthetic effect of Ethyl Chloride on venepuncture in a cancer patient. Secondary: Examinate the relation between Sex- Age, and pain of the patient. Estimate if Ethyl Chloride influences the achievement of successful cannulation. Describe adverse reactions of application Ethyl Chloride. Determine the discomfort produced by the spray. Method: Experimental and prospective study at a Medical Oncology Hospitalization Plant comparing the EVA scale pain score (1-10) 22G peripheral cannulation in patients treated with spray vs. pain in cannulation without nontreatment. Results: Discomfort's average score for EVA-scaled spray was 1.97 pts. (SD 2.09). 50% of patients reported an EVA value of 1 or lower. The average venepuncture pain score for a 22G catheter measured with an EVA scale was 2.63 points. (SD 2.32). 56.2% of participants reported EVA pain of 2 or less. 9 patients, 28.1%, reported no pain. In 6 venepunctures (18.7%) the nurse noticed an improvement in the location of the vein after applying the spray. In any case was described an increase in the difficulty of cannulation. Sex and age are not related with pain value. More discomfort with the application of Ethyl Chloride doesn't increase the anesthetic effect. Success rate in cannulation: 81.25%. One case of local erythema was described after spray application, which was spontaneously finished in a few minutes. Conclusions: Ethyl Chloride shows a significant anesthetic effect on the peripheral catheter cannulation. No side effects of interest were related. Applying a cold spray seems to facilitate the technique in some cases.
