- Abstract
Urban areas with numerous backyard gardens where ornamental plants are planted are major source of alien plants propagules that might spread into natural and semi natural habitats such as forests. In our study, we investigated occurrence and frequency of alien plan species in urban forest (N 46°30’32.28”; E 15°41’7.26”) located between settlements Miklavž na Dravskem polju and Rogoza nearby Slovenian second largest town Maribor. The urban forest under study, covering 216 ha, is partly surrounded by expanding settlements, intensive agricultural land and roads. The entire forest is intersected with roads connecting nearby settlements and walking trails. The goal of our study was to present floristic composition of alien plant species. The forest was split into 22 study plots where we recorded alien species presence and their cover estimation. We distinguished between plots inside forest and at its edge. Total number of the observed alien plant species was 25, among them 11 were invasive. The most common species were Phytolacca americana, Impatiens parviflora and Duchesnea indica. Majority of the recorded alien plants was recognized as ornamentals. Urban forests are highly exposed to alien species propagule from nearby sources and are therefore continuously threatened by new invasions. Therefore, urban forests need to be monitored and appropriate action must be taken if new, potentially invasive plants are recognized.
