- Abstract
Nasal obstruction is important due to its frequency in the pathology of upper respiratory tracts, as well as to its consequences upon the development and functioning of the whole organism. Whichever its etiology, it causes modification in the permeability of the superior respiratory tracts and compensatory shifting to oral respiration. If the management of oral obstruction is mainly the responsibility of the otorhinolaryngologist, orthodontists should approach the dento-maxillary anomalies manifested in such patients. The present study aims at identifying the causes of nasal obstruction in a group of adolescents and at establishing a correlation with the antropological type, as well as the presence of some dento-maxillary anomalies. The data collected led to the conclusion that the causes of nasal obstruction are multiple, and that, once detected, they require a medico-surgical treatment for preventing subsequent corrections through orthodontic or orthognatic surgical treatments. In this way, the clinician may be oriented towards a most rigorous exploration of the superior respiratory tracts, for an early detection of the pathology responsible for the installation of nasal obstruction, considered as a preventive activity
