- Abstract
The article presents an in-depth examination into the jurisdiction conflicts within the Eastern Orthodox churches in the post-Soviet Union sphere of influence. Introductory details are provided outlining the political rift between ecclesiastical jurisdictions among the Russian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church of Georgia over independent territories such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Accounts are given discussing the formation of the "Alan Diocese," representing the South Ossetians, through connections with the Greek Old Calendarist faction. Analysis is then provided evaluating its claims of legitimacy and efforts towards canonical recognition by the global Orthodox community.
