- Title
Adam Smith Reconsidered: History, Liberty, and the Foundations of Modern Politics by Paul Sagar (review).
- Authors
Harris, James A.
- Abstract
Paul Sagar's book, "Adam Smith Reconsidered: History, Liberty, and the Foundations of Modern Politics," challenges the prevailing view of Adam Smith as primarily a moral philosopher concerned with the moral justification of commercial society. Sagar argues that Smith should be seen as a political thinker, and explores the political questions addressed in Smith's work. Sagar emphasizes the importance of the rule of law in Smith's conception of freedom and examines the historical context in which liberty emerged in Europe. He also discusses the threat to liberty posed by the dominance of the mercantile interest in commercial society. Overall, Sagar's book offers a fresh perspective on Smith's political thought and its relevance to modern politics.
