Patient Advocacy and Constraint: Reflections on the Challenges of Patient Representation.
- Authors
Martin, Donald R.; Heyworth, Judith A.; O'Brien, Jill L.; Tipton, Bryan K.
- Abstract
The article presents a study looking at the challenges faced by patient advocacy groups in health care settings. A qualitative analysis of responses from patient advocates found that the constraint of conflict of interest often takes place when advocates try to resolve patient complaints related to the quality of medical care, employee behavior and attitude, and the advocate's role within the hospital setting. According to the article, training for patient advocates should prepare advocates for the inherent conflict of interest challenge.
