- Abstract
The present study sought to evaluate the self-care pattern adopted among users with type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus assisted by a BHU in the city of Caxias, Maranhão. This is a descriptive study, with a quantitative approach. Patients who, although selected, were not present at the time of the visit, were excluded. We performed data collection using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire - SDSCA (Questionnaire on self-care activities in diabetes - PAF) that addresses topics such as: food, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, foot care, medication and smoking history. There were a total of 87 participants. The data referring to food brought an important sociocultural issue related to the concept of "healthy diet", most of them reported not doing weekly physical exercises, remaining sedentary. There were positive findings regarding adherence to drug treatment, foot care and smoking cessation, however, worrying data was raised regarding the lack of glycemic monitoring. Therefore, it is essential that there is frequent incentive from health services referring mainly to the flaws in this self-care so that the user has the autonomy and responsibility to make decisions aiming at full adherence to treatment, benefiting their health and quality of life.
