- Title
The Allure of Polymer Banknotes in the Middle East.
- Authors
SMITH, DAN
- Abstract
The Middle East has shown a growing interest in polymer banknotes as a symbol of modernization, despite concerns about their environmental impact. Several Gulf States, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, have embraced polymer banknotes for their durability and security features. However, these banknotes emit nearly triple the greenhouse gas emissions of traditional paper notes. While the Middle East sees polymer banknotes as a step towards modernization, environmentalists are concerned about the region's stance on addressing the global plastic crisis. In contrast, the European Central Bank and the United States have chosen to stick with traditional paper banknotes.
