- Title
Mesmeric Weapons: South Africa's Nuclear Program.
- Authors
Kampmark, Binoy
- Abstract
The article discusses the South African nuclear weapons program and its lessons for non-proliferation efforts. Despite being marginalized and subject to sanctions, the apartheid regime of South Africa was able to develop a formidable nuclear arsenal with external aid and resourcefulness. The article highlights the reluctance of nuclear powers to admit new members to the nuclear club and the deceptive nature of the promise to eventually dismantle their own arsenals. The parallels between South Africa and North Korea are also explored, emphasizing the importance of secrecy and claiming to have more weapons in order to maintain a position of power. The article concludes by discussing the potential consequences if South Africa had remained a nuclear state, including the impact on Libya, Israel, and Iran.
