- Abstract
In the selection of the authors of paintings for the Gallery of the Eneide in Palazzo Buonaccorsi, the client certainly followed his taste, calling artists from various Italian centers, which characterized the project with a certain stylistic uniformity. However, even in such a choice, based essentially on the qualities and prestige of the individual authors, the critical tradition of the pictorial schools, with their specific characteristics, well recognizable and codified by historiography, probably also influenced. In light of these considerations, this contribution reconstructs the development of the concept of pictorial school from the introduction, at the beginning of the Seventeenth century, to the Eighteenth century, in the European context, with particular attention to the reflections on collecting, patronage and in general on the culture of art amateurs. Furthermore, this study points out the possible influence of Poussin's "theory of manners", which Félibien disseminated and associated with the different styles of the various schools, on the choices made by collectors and more informed and sensitive clients, as in the case of marquis Buonaccorsi.
