- Abstract
Introduction: There is no scientific evidence to support the advantages of self-ligating systems over conventional systems in orthodontics. Purpose: To compare the OPG and RANKL expression in periodontal ligament of teeth with self-ligating orthodontic brackets and conventionally ligated brackets. Methods: Expression of OPG and RANKL was evaluated through RT-PCR in periodontal ligament of 40 teeth extracted due to orthodontic indication. In the experimental group ten teeth had self-ligation brackets and ten teeth had conventional brackets during 15 days before teeth extraction. 20 premolars were included in the control group. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: RANKL was significantly greater in the compression side in both orthodontic systems, self-ligating and conventional. OPG expression was not statistically signifcant. Conclusions: There are not differences in the expression of RANKL and OPG in the periodontal ligament in self-ligating orthodontic and conventionally ligated brackets.
