- Abstract
Mucus Secretion: The Unsung Hero of Human Health is a commentary that highlights the important role of mucus in safeguarding human well-being. Mucus, produced by specialized cells called goblet cells and mucous glands, is composed of water, mucins, electrolytes, and immune cells. It serves as a physical barrier in the respiratory system, trapping airborne particles and preventing them from reaching the lungs. Mucus also protects the gastrointestinal tract by coating the mucosal surface in the stomach and acting as a lubricant in the intestines. Additionally, mucus contains immune defenses that neutralize pathogens. Disruption of mucus secretion can lead to various disorders and diseases. Ongoing research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of mucus production and clearance for the development of targeted therapies.
