- Abstract
This study examined the effects of metacognition strategies in the teaching of reading and comprehension of Bahasa Melayu using expository text. The purpose of this study is to assess students' achievement in comprehending text using metacognition strategies and also to assess the impact of the strategies used in the teaching of reading and comprehension. In addition, this study also aims to identify metacognition strategies used by students in the three reading processes (before, during and after reading). This study used a quasi-experimental design. The study sample involved 60 students of Year 4 from one government primary school in Brunei Muara District. The sample was divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group. Each group consisted of 30 average students. The results of this study were analyzed using t-test of independent samples to assess whether there are significant differences in the mean performance of reading comprehension between the control and experimental groups in pre and post test. One Way ANCOVA analysis is used to determine the effect of metacognition strategies for teaching reading comprehension. T-test analysis showed that there was a significant difference in the mean of reading comprehension performance scores between the experimental group and the control group, t (60) = 12.96, p <0.0. Meanwhile, One Way ANCOVA data analysis showed, p = 0.00 <0.05 (F-ratio = 493.22/2.25 = 219.41 p <0.05) also demonstrated the significant effect of metacognition strategies in teaching comprehension. The study also showed that metacognition strategies used by the respondents during their reading process are varied. As a whole, metacognition reading strategies used by the respondents in this study can enhance comprehension of reading text.
