At first sight, intertidal mussel beds give the impression of being depauperate communities, as mussels are by far the dominant macroscopic organisms. Wave-exposed mussel beds exhibited a higher species richness, favoring the occurrence of filter-feeders, while wave-sheltered beds favored the occurrence of small predators.
