- Title
Remo And British Imperialism, 1892-1894.
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of Remo, a political entity within the Ijebu Kingdom of Nigeria, in British imperialism. Remo was ruled by the Awujale ruler until the British colonized the Ijebu Kingdom, after which Remo was separated from the kingdom. Gilbert Carter, the British governor of the region, sought approval to bring the kingdom under British control and was able to secure the annexation of some areas. The Awujale and the Akarigbo Oyebago, a local ruler, conflicted over the authority of the Awujale over Remo towns. Carter attempted to negotiate for British control over the Remo town of Ikorodu, Nigeria by proposing a British protectorate over Remo to the Akarigbo.
