- Abstract
"The Many Faces of Credulitas: Credibility, Credulity, and Belief in Post-Reformation Catholicism" by Tutino explores the changing relationship between belief, credulity, and credibility in post-Reformation Catholic Europe. The author argues that the contemporary understanding of credibility and credulity has its roots in the Enlightenment, where credulity was seen as an intellectual sin against reason. However, in early modern Catholicism, the two concepts were related, with the importance of intellectual judgment in embracing faith being emphasized. The book examines this topic, debunking the caricature of early modern Catholicism as rigid and closed to free debate. It also explores the influence of credibility and reasonability in Catholic discourse and the delicate balance between credibility and orthodoxy. The work provides valuable insights into the intellectual legacy of the Counter-Reformation and challenges myths about this period.
