- Authors
Moore, Matt
- Abstract
The article examines changes in historians' perceptions of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. Particular focus is given to the use of this and other historiographic inquiries in the teaching of U.S. history. According to the author, examining a chronological sequence of historical accounts can help students to understand the role of historical context in the writing of history. Excerpts from several textbook accounts of de Soto are presented along with suggested questions for analysis on topics including the use of visual art in history, the concept of Manifest Destiny, and Native Americans.
