- Abstract
The article focuses on the theoretical approach to voting behavior. Traditional democratic theory regards a high level of political participation as a central element of democracy. Participation includes those voluntary activities by which members of a society share in the selection of rulers and directly or indirectly in the formulation of public policy. The fact that even in societies generally defined as democratic a large portion of citizens may be apathetic to the political process leads to the conclusion that understanding the conditions under which one has a high or low intention to vote is crucial to understanding the conditions under which democracy is maintained or weakened. Analysis of several approaches and data regarding political participation revealed that voting behavior is related to a variety of variables. Further study is required to ascertain the applicability of the proposed model for other societies, taking into consideration the classification of political systems according to the criteria proposed by theoretical framework.
