- Abstract
An essay is presented concerning the organization of the first major parade honoring the memory of explorer Christopher Columbus in New York City in 1892. The article examines the social context of the parade concerning Native Americans and Italian Americans, the intentions of parade organizers for social inclusiveness, and the actions of then-U.S. president Benjamin Harrison. The article also discusses the ethnicity and background of Columbus and an installation by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi at Columbus Circle in New York City.
