- Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "La Recherche de l'absolu" by Honoré de Balzac is presented. It focuses on the relationship between servant and master, both as a stereotype and as a symbolism of social changes in 19th-century France. An analysis of the main two characters is offered, focusing on the obsession for science and the quest of the Absolute of the master Balthazar Claës, his mental illness, and the transformation of the servant Lemulquinier into the protector of his master.
