The article examines the significance of dogs depicted in "Marriage A-la-Mode," a series of paintings by 18th century English artist William Hogarth, and draws on scholarship regarding the importance of animals as symbols within 18th century culture. According to the author, the dogs represent concepts such as emotion, marriage, and social class. Noted paintings discussed include "The Marriage Settlement," "The Tete a Tete," and "The Lady's Death."
