- Authors
Perry, Alyssa; Talbert, Matthew D.
- Abstract
This article explores the underrepresentation of women in collegiate wind band conducting and the challenges they face in balancing their careers with having a family. Research shows that only around 10% of college wind band conductors are women, and the article examines the historical and cultural factors that have contributed to this gender imbalance. Interviews with female band directors reveal their career paths, struggles, and advice for aspiring female band directors. The article suggests that mentorship, increased representation, and changes in search committee practices are needed to address the gender imbalance in the field. Additionally, it highlights the need for further research to make the career more accommodating for women who choose to have a family.
