- Abstract
The article discusses transition from traditional classrooms to online learning. The internet presents challenges and opportunities to change how professors teach and learn. To teach successfully online, the professor needs to know as much as possible about learning online. The characteristics of traditional classroom learning were, the course is held at a specific time and only at that time; discipline is external, course provider and instructor, not the learner, usually imposes the course structure and meeting times. Characteristics of online learning are, content is delivered primarily through a web browser. Students must actively participate and direct the learning experience, the course can generally be taken at anytime convenient to the learner's schedule, discipline is internal. If a faculty member wants to experiment with technology, the best choice might be a web-enhanced course. The web-enhanced course uses the web to support a traditional course using web technology to deliver the usual course support documents such as the syllabus, reading list, course calendar and course and project requirements. The web provides support for faculty-to-student dialogue and student-to-student dialogue. Office hours can also be supplemented with email and online bulletin board communication.
