- Abstract
The article explores the role of the international telegraph network on the crisis between Chile and the U.S. in 1891-1892. The telegraph network commenced on October 2, 1882. It was controlled by James Scrymser of the Central and South America Telegraph Co. and its affiliate, the Mexican Telegraph Co. Historians perceived the arrival of the telegraphic communications as an example of late-nineteenth-century material progress. However, some studies have emphasized the role of the telegraph in heightened tensions and policy complications. His The specific incident that led the U.S. and Chile on the brink of war was the deaths of two U.S. sailors from the Baltimore navy ship on October 16, 1891 while on shore leave in Valparaiso.
