- Abstract
The article discusses the Taiwanese film "1895," and its use of the Hakka language and focus on Hakka ethnicity. Topics include background on the film, and its adaptation from Hakka writer Li Kheu's script, the film's representation of a multi-ethnic Taiwan, and of the Hakka and other Taiwanese populations, as they existed in 1895, at the start of the Japanese colonization of Taiwan; and the film's re-examination of Taiwanese identity through the re-establishment of Hakka voices within the historical narrative.
