- Abstract
The article focuses on a study which reveals that two antibiotic associated pathogens, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Clostridium difficile use a common strategy of catabolizing microbiota-liberated mucosal carbohydrates during its expansion in the gut. S. typhimurium expansion is facilitated by fucose and sialic acid within the lumen of the gut whereas C. difficile expansion is aided by sialic acid levels.
