- Title
Immunology: Lipopolysaccharide sensing on the inside.
- Authors
Rathinam, Vijay A. K.; Fitzgerald, Katherine A.
- Abstract
The article discusses a study which examined a TLR4-independent sensing mechanism for lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that happens in the cytoplasm of macrophages. Conducted by A. Poltorak et al., the study investigated inflammasome activation during Gram-negative bacterial infections. The researchers found that lipopolysaccharide can be sensed in the cytoplasm. It is noted that the results have implications for the treatment of sepsis.
